Patient Care Technician

Our Patient Care Technician (PCT) program is a great way to start building your skills.

(Students must be at least 16 years of age.)Nursing Assistant helps a patient to wheelchair using a gait belt.

  • Small class sizes
  • Participants will earn a total of 9 college credits upon completion of the PCT certificate.
  • As part of the PCT certificate program students complete the nursing assistant course and are eligible, but not required, to take the State of Wisconsin Nurse Aide Competency Examination.
  • Upon completion of the PCT program, students are eligible to take the PCT certification exam.
  • Students will complete various, hands-on clinical experiences at either a hospital, clinic, or nursing home setting. 

What is a Patient Care Technician

  • Patient Care Technician Course Description:
    This course is designed to provide students with the essential knowledge and hands-on clinical skills needed to perform a broad range of patient care procedures and techniques, essential to the role of a Patient Care Technician (PCT). Students will gain theoretical knowledge of key concepts such as patient-centered care, quality and safety, and effective communication, while developing the practical expertise necessary to provide high-quality patient care within the role of a PCT. Prerequisites: NA 150

Emphasizing teamwork and collaboration, this course prepares students to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary care team, ensuring they are well-equipped to excel in diverse healthcare settings. 

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Demonstrate professionalism through adherence to ethical guidelines, patient privacy regulations, and a commitment to maintaining a compassionate, respectful attitude in all patient interactions (Program Outcome 5).
  2. Use clear, compassionate, and effective communication skills to interact with patients, families, and the healthcare team, ensuring proper patient understanding and coordination of care (Program Outcome 1).
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in essential clinical skills: accurately perform vital sign measurements, phlebotomy procedures, electrocardiography (ECG), and other key patient care techniques required for PCT practice, ensuring safety and comfort (Program Outcome 3).
  4. Implement proper infection control measures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hand hygiene, and safe specimen collection, to maintain a safe and hygienic environment for patients and healthcare providers (Program Outcome 3).
  5. Effectively monitor vital signs, lab results, and ECG readings (Program Outcome 2)
  6. Accurately document patient information according to healthcare facility protocols and standards of practice (Program Outcome 1).

* Content-specific medical terminology will be incorporated into each content section

Admission Requirements

All requirements for program entry must be completed prior to entry into the program.

  • Students must be at least 16 years of age
  • Documentation of immunization history
  • Technical Standards Inventory (signed by parent/guardian for students under 18 years of age)
  • Two-step TB testing
  • Clinical and Lab Attendance is Mandatory

Clinical Requirements

  • A caregiver background check will be completed after registration
